Why can’t Apple Mac OS X Mail users send mail (SMTP) when using the UK ISP Demon?

If you have recently signed up to Demon Broadband, the UK ISP, and you’re a Mac user, you will know that Demon don’t support Apple Mac users. That’s OK, we Mac users are used to this kind of attitude however, when Demon tells clients who are having problems with sending email, “Oh yes, you can receive email but you will need to use the Demon Webmail service to send emails!” It’s time to cry foul and get some answers up on the web!

I took a look for a Demon client and here’s the solution. I discovered that there were a number of problems. Firstly, as with many ISPs, it’s set up multiple email accounts and so my client was having problems distinguishing between her Demon account password and her POP3 password. We sorted that problem easily.

Now to the real sending problem. Demon requires SSL to be turned on and for password authentication to be used. I have discovered there’s NO fixed convention for user names. Some systems require only the digits before the @ whereas other ISPs require the entire email address. THIS was at the root of the problem with Demon SMTP. Demon give each subscriber a host name, for SMTP the user name only enter: hostname.demon.co.uk   And for the password, use the loginpassword not the POP3 password.

Finally, and again I don’t know why, although Apple Mail already enters the default ports of 25, 465 and 587, for some reason the Demon system trips up at the first Port 25 and so you need to change the setting to: Use custom port and enter 587
